About Mahashivratri Shivratri is celebrated at the end of the Navaratri festival. Puranas say that Lord Shiva drank the poison from the pot which emerged from Samudra Manthan and held it in his throat. Since then, he is known as Neelakantha (blue throat). Shivratri is celebrated as an event since then when Lord Shiva saved the world from this poison.
